• Description

  Mikumi National Park, located in southern Tanzania, is the fourth-largest national park in the country, covering an area of approximately 3,230 square kilometres. Established in 1964, it is part of the larger Selous ecosystem, which is one of the most significant wildlife conservation areas in Africa. The park is conveniently located about 283 kilometres west of Dar es Salaam, making it one of the most accessible wildlife destinations in Tanzania. Mikumi’s landscape is dominated by the vast Mkata River floodplain, which is often compared to the Serengeti Plains due to its similar savannah environment. This open terrain makes wildlife viewing relatively easy, and the park is home to a wide variety of animals. Elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and wildebeests are commonly seen, along with more elusive species like leopards and wild dogs. The park is also home to a significant population of hippos, which can be found in the Hippo Pools, where visitors can observe them up close. Mikumi's birdlife is equally impressive, with over 400 species recorded, making it a haven for birdwatchers. The park's accessibility and wildlife diversity make it a popular choice for both short and extended safaris, offering a rich experience without the crowds often found in Tanzania’s northern parks. Mikumi’s close proximity to the city and good road connections also mean it is often used as a stopover for travellers heading to other destinations like Ruaha National Park or the Udzungwa Mountains.
